There are many reasons
why people can’t read and write well.
We can be a reason you can!
Here is what one student said about our program:
“I had tried a few times earlier in my life to learn to read, perhaps 30 years ago. Last year, I was referred to Sumner Adult Ed. I was nervous about who I would talk to. I was very uncomfortable but knew I had to make myself do it. It’s not easy to tell someone you need help with reading. They made me feel comfortable. At first, they allowed me to work one-on-one, in a private setting. This is exactly what I wanted. They have made it a lot easier than I thought it would be. It’s all about steps, even if it’s one new word a day.
I really wished I had done this earlier. When I was young adult, I was intimidated by the thought of an older person teaching me to read. At the center, it’s not like I remember school. They are committed and have never made me feel bad about not being able to read well. They incorporate everyday words, everyday life, and things that keep you interested.
I feel it is what you put into it. I wish I could do more. The computer has been a great help to me. Reading is more interesting. I am reading more and feeling confident about it. The more you try, the more you do, the easier it comes. I find myself reading more, like posters and signs in an office. I took part in a book discussion for the first time. In a year it will surprise you how much you can learn. I can sound out so many words. You need to set time aside every day to work on it.
I would recommend the center. It’s comfortable, private, and they encourage me.”
